Summary

Beta Omega Alumni Association’s scholarship funds are maintained for the benefit of the Beta Omega Chapter of Theta Xi Fraternity in support of it’s active members.  Two funds (Wiss Scholarship and Vredenburgh Leadership ) are maintained and managed by the Virginia Tech Foundation, while the other (the Beta Omega Chapter Education Account or “CEA”) is under the umbrella of the Theta Xi National Foundation.

Contributions may also made be made, and are encouraged, to the Theta Xi National Foundation General Fund in support of the mission of the fraternity and “Theta Xi Experience” for all of it’s members.

These are off balance sheet “quasi” assets of BOAA in that they are not within complete control of the association and therefore not included on BOAA financial statements.

James E. Vredenburgh Leadership Fund (VT Foundation #860721)

Established in August 2012 by the Beta Omega Alumni Association of Theta Xi Fraternity and the Virginia Tech Foundation to endow a scholarship fund in perpetuity to honor Jim’s lifelong dedication to Theta Xi Fraternity, and the lasting impact he had on the fraternity, the Interfraternity Council at Virginia Tech, and lives of young men throughout Beta Omega’s history. Leadership development is a core value of Theta Xi Fraternity and was at the core of Jim’s work and legacy.

Contributions are tax deductible, eligible for coorporate matching, viewed favorably by Virginia Tech, and recognized under both university and B.O.A.A. lifetime giving societies.

The Vredenburgh Fund reached full endowment in FYE June 2022 and is now invested in the Virginia Tech Foundation investment portfolio ( https://www.vtf.org/portfolio ) into perpetuity for the purpose of generating funds for awards to support Leadership Development scholarship assistance. Current fund balances and award activity are reported annually under the Annual Scholarship Fund Report tab.

HENRY H. WISS SCHOLARSHIP FUND (VT FOUNDATION #884808)

This Fund was established December 1995 and to date 24 brothers have been awarded funds for Virginia Tech tuition assistance based on academic criteria for Associate Member and Active Brothers. Contribution funds are invested in the Virginia Tech Foundation investment portfolio (https://www.vtf.org/portfolio ) into perpetuity for the purpose of generating funds for awards to support scholarship assistance. Contributions made to this fund are added to the endowment as principle with only earnings on this principle available for scholarships.

Contributions are tax deductible, eligible for coorporate matching, viewed favorably by Virginia Tech, and recognized under both university and B.O.A.A. lifetime giving societies.

Current fund balances and award activity are reported annually under the Annual Scholarship Fund Report tab.

Theta Xi National Foundation

The Chapter Education Account (CEA) is managed as part of the Theta Xi National Foundation as a sub account for the exclusive use and benefit of the Beta Omega chapter.  The national fraternity provides all administration, reporting and receipts for these gifts. Interest earned on funds in the account are retained by the Foundation. The CEA is an additional contribution opportunity to the National Foundation, of which many Beta Omega alumni contribute annually.

Gifts are made to “Beta Omega Chapter Education Account” and are tax deductible.  In most cases, disbursements are made in response to “Grant” requests that historically BOAA has made including:

§   Grants to build or remodel educational areas within chapter houses (i.e. libraries, study rooms, computer rooms, etc.)

§   Grants to provide educational resources (i.e. computers, library resources, periodicals, study desks, study lamps, etc.)

§   Chapter House building and remodeling loans

§   Grants for scholarship and academic awards for undergraduate Brothers, including registration/ travel costs (not covered by national fraternity) for national conventions, President’s Academy, Rising Stars Academy

Theta National Fraternity has confirmed that funds in the Beta Omega CEA will remain intact and available should we successfully recolonize in 2023.

Interestingly, although not available in 1995 when the Wiss Fund was established, the national fraternity foundation now has the ability to provide and manage a scholarship fund similar to the way the Virginia Tech Foundation has worked with BOAA. Theta Xi Foundation Scholarship

Scholarships are established by the alumni association of the chapter, not the Theta Xi Foundation.  The Foundation simply holds the funds for tax purposes.  Donors are eligible for corporate matching programs as Theta Xi Foundation is a 501c3 and currently receives corporate matches and that apply to the Chapter Educations accounts also.  B.O.A.A. exploring this as part of re-chartering assets in a rechartering effort 2022-23, but only after the Vredenburgh endowment completed.

Your gift can be used to continue the Theta Xi Foundation’s support of both chapter and individual member educational programs or you can specify the purpose for which your donation will be used. For example, gifts to the Foundation may be desiganted to:

  • Beta Omega Chapter Education Account

  • Vredenburgh Leadership Academies - President’s Academy, Rising Stars Academy, Newell

Presently, Theta Xi Fraternity is in the midst of a $3 million capital campaign to endow scholarship opportunities to the Vredenburgh Academies into perpetuity. For more information: https://www.thetaxi.org/give/endowment-campaign/

If your interest is in supporting chapter housing, a deductible gift can be made to the Foundation and directed to the Unicorn Fund.

All gifts are recognized as part of Theta Xi Fraternity’s Annual Fund Drive, making membership in a Theta Xi Foundation Giving Club easier to obtain. For more information Alumni and Friends of Theta Xi can learn more about supporting Theta Xi here.
